Depressing...

I almost always find these salary surveys depressing: it doesn't matter who does them, I'm always several thousand dollars under the median salary and a couple percent under the median raise.

For 2013, the average percentage raise was about 2% in our company and we were told just yesterday that there would be no raises for 2014 (due to the state of the industry).

I think it was Jack Ganssle who wrote that, in the embedded realm, we give up a little in salary for some job stability.  Unfortunately, I don't find that to be true, either.

A couple of anecdotes from the field via GigaOm ... at least for the truly talented working in advanced fields (and before people chime in about funny goings on in the IT field, which is a different issue) ...

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
