Hi Luke -- I want both your truck AND your Nixie Tube speedometer -- I'll trade you for my wife's two stupid dogs (LOL)

Hey Luke,

Great project idea, however, I'd simply make use of a cheap Arduino (ebay) and the GPS module from Adafruit for $40.  Then drive BCD out of the Arduino pins to your Nixie tubes.  You'll only need 4 pins per tube for the BCD control.

Ah, but then I see you may *want* to do this in an FPGA, so good luck!

Cheers    -- Mike

So, how's all that transfer coming along?  How much longer before all the APP content lands?

Why not an APP archive instead?

@Max "but I'm just one man (sob sob)... take pity!"

Instead of you manually re-entering the APP articles one at a time, it would be far faster, and considerably less Sisyphean, for your Vogon Overlords at UBM to make the ORIGINAL SITE available AS AN ARCHIVE, INCLUDING BOTH THE ORIGINAL ARTICLES AND THE USER COMMENTS.

-Brian

p.s.

Preferably along with Scope Junction and other user-content-driven websites that the UBM division of the Vogon Constructor Fleet has previously demolished.

p.p.s.

I would link to my original post on Programmable Planet stating essentially the same as above, but I can't BECAUSE THE BLOODY WEBSITE IS GONE.

As best I recall, my closing question went something like this:

When next you dine with those who "wear the UBM undergarments of authority", ask them this:

How long do they think technically savvy users will continue to generate content, for free, for a publisher who demolishes the resulting websites on short notice with no publicly accessible archive?

What about accuracy?

Nice project.

How will the system behave when the GPS signals are noisy or inaccurate?

The resolution of such cheap GPS receivers are normally at 3 to 5m. Can it really identify a sharp corner especially when the signals are weak? If so what are the design techniques involved?

Why use FPGA instead of a cheap microcontroller?

I know some of these questions will be answered in your next part. But as always it is curiosity that drives us ahead.

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Times’ Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
