Interesting move for Sony. With thirty percent market share, one wonders what they're looking for out of CMOS. They're struggling in a number of markets, perhaps this is their way of hedging their bets.

Sony's Imaging Division is their most successful team, at the moment, and their sensors are constructed with CMOS.

With new Apple iPhone and iPad employing Sony image sensor, Sony needs to respond swiftly. Probably whole fab may be busy with CMOS image sensor for Apple.

Sony's CMOS image sensors are designed into not only Apple's products but some of those by Samsung. In fact, when it comes to the higher megapixel CMOS image sensors (above 8 megapixels) Sony practically owns the market. Considering the CMOS image sensors are featured in not just smartphones, but also tablets and many more in automotive, I can easily imagine, I can easily imagine their production capacity is becoming an important factor.

Renesas' Tsuruoka fab was initially rumored to be sold to TSMC before Renesas became the Japanese government-owned company. Selling the fab to any company is much better than shutting it down, considering all the cost involved in closing a fab. Expect a bargain deal Sony may be getting here...

@Junko: Quality of the output color is key factor. Sony CMOS image sensor output is so vivid and wonderful. Sony can have much bigger market share. However, it is very difficult for small or medium scale company to get its product.

Other vendors do support small designers.

and Pixim was acquired by Sony a couple of years ago so perhaps this new technology will result end up in some big products over the next year or two. Pixim targeted Security Cameras but the wide dynamic range of the technology can be applied to the entire range of imaging applications...

@Krisi: (1) The endoscopy image I have observed as compared to many other products. They are considered benchmark for all other products.

(2) The specification of these product provide much superior specifications.

(3) And now, Apple and Samsung also employs them.

May be they understand color sensor physics, optics and semiconductor process much better as compare to all others.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
