Qualcomm has been pushing AllJoyn for quite some time. And yet there are still questions as to why more of the major companies haven't joined in on this effort and which work groups and tasks AllSeeen will end up organizing.

It does not make sense for most of these companies which Qualcomm is beating in the mobile space to join. If I am in their shoes, I will strike a different deal

I'd love to hear views on the pros and cons of the AllJoyn or AllSeen code which is now available online from software engineers who have had hands on time with it.

Good question especially Google which knows how to work with communities. I do not see how this will work very well without Google

@kris, yes, that's a good point, and yet, if you are NOT Google or Samsung or Apple, you can't afford doing nothing. Right?

"Jack of all trades, master of none". For some reason that is what comes to my mind. IMHO there is a lot of wheel reinvention in the code --for example, the "qcc" helper classes and design of the services framework-- and assumptions about the capabilities of the target environment which will be difficult to guarantee in a constrained embedded system. But I guess Qualcomm's vision of IoT is for devices with certain level of resources on par with the current times, equipped with WiFi, JVMs, JavaScript interpreters..., and I can understand some of their decisions on the architecture. Windows, WinRT, Darwin and POSIX systems should be supported out of the box. There are even some plugs and demos for Android (which I have been able to test successfully) and Unity.

Browsing the source code, my mind fills with reminiscences of implementations of CORBA, IrDA stacks and, perhaps, Jini. Although functional, we all know how well those fared when users tried to deploy the technology and faced frequent usage. Personally, I would have expected and preferred a carefully tailored KISS framework instead, maybe something similar to ZeroMQ's flexible "smart sockets" concept in place of a full blown client-service scheme. Hopefully the development of AllJoyn will evolve in the right direction under the Linux Foundation.

@PBleyer: Good feedback.

Indeed as a cellular chip provider, Qcomm currently has no or little stake in the lower end IoT world where Zigbee/BT/etc rule so its assumptions on systems resources may be skewed to the high end.

And yeah, whatever happened to Sun Microsystem's Jini (child of Bill Joy)? And what does its fate say about challenges ahead for AllSeen?
