I also have used '"PCB Designer by Niche Software" for years in my classroom. I recently had to upgrade to windows 7 running 64 bit. Now my PCD Designer will not run!!!!! (is 32 bit software) Have you come across a fix for this? I really like to use the software for my young students because everything else out there is too complex. Can you contact me Thank you in advance.

@David Ashton...did you at the time figure out how it worked??

No. I was eight or nine years old at the time and did not know binary math. I recall amazing all the relatives and being stubborn about not telling how it was done because magicians were not allowed to reveal their secrets.

I had those cards. They came as an insert in Dynamite Magazine, a kid's magazine back in the seventies.

Thanks for the memory.

Octal representation

You can see how the cards work more easily if you represent the numbers in octal.  But then you'd have a harder time amazing your friends and relatives with your mind-reading ability.

@Zwede - as I said, for the uninitiated you could use it as a decimal to binary converter for numbers less than 64.  Just write "32 16 8 4 2 1" and underneath those numbers, write a 1 if your number is on the corresponding card, and 0 if it is not.  Bingo - Binary representation of your number!

@Antedeluvian - of course I don't mind!  I am also looking forward to more of your articles.   I have a very good book called Excel by Example by a guy called Aubrey Kagan (unfortunately now out of print) which has some very good Excel tricks in it.   I learned a lot from that! :-)

I have a binary clock (BCD format) in my office on top of my computer to confuse people.

I'll have to print up a copy of those cards for my own neferious purposes.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
