Great choice!

Here's a new Makezine article by Dr. Huang on how he built his own open source laptop computer.

Now, if he could just make it truly open source by getting Xilinx to release the bit format for the FPGA so that it can be designed using free-as-in-freedom open-source tools.  EE Live! keynote would be a great place to advocate for that.

How could you not with all that he has accomplished? This is an exciting choice for speaker and should be an informative session.

Seems like there has to be another opinion of someone who has become famous for hacking "closed" hardware platforms.. Would Microsoft consider him a hero or a criminal?

Would this be the same Microsoft that has been found guilty of unlawful monopolistic practices, both in the USA and EU?

I suspect MS isn't too overly fond of him after the court case in which he testified about the legality of modding Xboxes. MS didn't get the win they were hoping for on that one.

I had never heard of Huang but am really interested in knowing more about the direction of this open hardware movement he talks about and Caleb has written on.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
