I think many of these ideas are very common in sales. The "black hat" aspect of it comes down to intent. If the sale is somehow malicious, I can see black hat influence.

@Max The Magnificent  it's alwyas interesting to me how analytical-logical thinkers believe that these techniques don't influence them. Fortunately or unfortunately, the tricks work...

I always like to think that I'm not unduly influenced by tricks like these .... so maybe the way to get to me is to tell me how clever I am to not be unduly influenced by tricks like these (thereby pushing my "pride" button) and then try to sell me something LOL
