Just finished reading an in depth review of this platform by Ian Cutress and Rahul Garg at AnnandTech http://www.anandtech.com/show/7677/amd-kaveri-review-a8-7600-a10-7850k.

What impresses me most is not its graphics performance but its well thought out approach to Heterogeneous Systems Architecture. AMD has been the prime driver in this area and Kaveri is, by far, the most complete solution.

I've been waiting for my Adaptiva Parallella Supercomputer board for more than a year and am loosing interest. A PC based on Kaveri would be a much more convenient platform to do some of what I was planning to do with the Parallella board.

Even if AMD is currently dominant in the graphics space, can it hold on to its lead with all the changes that occuring elsewhere--including in servers and cloud where Intel remains dominant?

I agree. This is a morale booster more than anything. The real battle is in tablets and smartphones.

Hi Rick,   Thank you for the article and your observation about the PC space.

Companies do NOT need to be all things to all people...

AMD does NOT need to go to "war" in Tablets and smarphones to be extremely succesful.

In my opinion,  AMD has much better strengths in the server space.

Remember,  smart phones and Tablets are NOTHING without access to the CLOUD.

So, while Qualcomm does NOT have to be compettive in the Cloud, to be a highly successful company.

AMD does NOT have to compete in smart phones to be a highly successful company.

The large margins are in server chips, NOT in tablet chips.

As far as Graphics,  I think you really do NOT understand gaming,  where AMD is now completely dominant.

AMD will use their domination of gaming, to stay on top in grahics over the next few years.

MSFT and ORCL are supporting HSA!

Qualcomm, Samsung, ARM, TI.. It will not be long before Google and Apple join.

AMD's new management does NOT go after a space unlesss it has a long term strategic advantage, which will produce substantial profitability.

People LOVE AAA video games..  they dwarf Hollywood!

I highly suggest you try to understand the strategic genius of AMD's current positioning!

The market for hi end graphics may be substantial but is becomming less mainstream. Intel is targeting 'good enough' and seems to be succeeding.

I feel like AMD is gaining an edge in the old war over PCs, but just marking time in the new war for tablets and smartphones.

Also, I feel they are not making as much headway with graphics as they did with Opteron in servers back in the day.

What do others think?

While AMD is perfecting a laptop version of Kaveri, they have the majority of NEW discrte GPU design wins for Intel powered Laptops.

Intel's graphics are so weak, that they must rely upon a discrete GPU from either Nvidia or AMD.

ALL the new AAA games are being OPTIMIZED for AMD graphics.

Laptop OEMs understand that most of these games will be ported over to PCs using AMD's new MANTLE API.

The MANTLE API increases performance by 45% on AMD GCN graphics.

This explains WHY the majority of OEM's  chose AMD discrete GPUs for the NEW Laptops that will be introduced over the next few months.

So, while AMD is creating a Laptop version of Kaveri,  they are participating in the  high end laptop market through sales of their discrete GPUs.

It seems like a major advantage competitively for Intel and Haswell that Kaveri remains desktop-only....in spite of the cannibalization we're seeing in notebook sales these days, you have to figure mobile is still driving the notebook segment much more than the desktop market and that this is a problem for AMD until they can get notebook solutions as well as desktop ones.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems. Signal integrity sage Ransom Stephens will explain how PAM4 differs from NRZ and what to expect in design, measurement, and signal analysis.
