Open source h/w...what does it mean?

"Open source" has been a buzz word for quite a long time in the past and present and the topic was discussed & debated more by the firmware and software engineers. As a hardware guy I did not poke much into it. But now I see some changes might be around the corner and if I don't understand and adopt what is good about it, my skill set as a hardware engineer might soon be "obsolete"!! I see that IBM has opened up their server design - the gerbers, schematics etc...it this the trend for the server industries only? I believe some more are going to join in...who are they? What is the advantages for the hardware manufacturers? A few days back I saw an article on "open source PCB"!!! How can this make a revolution? Moreover what the skillset the hardware engineers would have....more hardware engineers would lose job?

@Sanjib.A, why do you think "Open source" trend will make hardware engineers lose their job ? Eventually companies do need hardware engineers to build optimal design even if most of the design is made open source.

@Anand: Good point, Everybody WANTS to be the architect, but mostly companies need engineers to work on implementation issues.

Some would argue open hardware may eliminate a few proroetary design positions but opens to door to more folks coming up with novel architecures for the community.

I just hope that this open source wave will someday open the floodgates of those patents dearly held by a few to make millions.

In my opinion evey new idea  should become open source for the world!

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
