SMIC in 28nm

I suspect this is less about SMIC helping ARM expand its 28nm reach (which is already broad and deep) and more about SMIC finally getting some 28nm process ready to roll.

Anyone know the situation for SMIC in 28nm? Are they ready?

As I reported almost a year ago, SMIC was not ready for 28-nm (they told us then they didn't expect to get ready for it until the end of 2013). Therfore, SMIC was unable to cater to its biggest customer Spreadtrum, who was moving to 28-nm process late 2013 and took its business to TSMC. http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36&doc_id=1287248

However, in that context, I find this announcement important. China certainly expects its very own China-based foundry to respond to the needs of China's largest smartphone chip vendor Spreadtrum (now, merged with RDA, has become China's government-owned company).

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling.
