As recently as 12 years ago I lived in a small town in Zimbabwe that still had a Strowger exhange.  I did some training on them earlier in life and went into some of the larger exhanges in Harare (the capital).  The techies let me into the one in my small town a few times and it was nice hearing the rhythm of the switches again.  Mr Strowger did a good job....

I have heard this story from other sources, and picked the following off Wikipedia:

"According to some accounts, Alman Strowger, an undertaker, was motivated to invent an automatic telephone exchange after having difficulties with the local telephone operators, one of whom was the wife of a competitor. He was said to be convinced that she, as one of the manual telephone exchange operators was sending calls "to the undertaker" to her husband."

So, perhaps a call for the dead motivated a 'live' invention...

In that case, I must be like a one-man version of Lewis & Clark, because I've made enough mistakes to found a nation LOL

I wonder what the density was compared to the core rope memory that was used for the Apollo Guidance Computer. Presumably programming a board of such memory was faster (and perhaps less error-prone) than rewiring a board of core rope memory, which would have improved debug cycle time. Perhaps such memory did not satisfy other requirements (e.g., speed), but it is also possible that the people at MIT were unaware of such alternatives. (As Seymour Cray stated: "One of the problems of being a pioneer is you always make mistakes".)
