This type of optimization can be done on the other side of the standard interface, but there is also significant work being done by the operating system people on smarter filesystems that can utilize raw flash arrays. It seems obvious to me that at some point flash storage is going to have to have a separate interface that uses it more effectively than SATA or others that are made for spinning metal. The question is on which side of that interface do these optimizations fall?
