This is again another alternative open source initiative like beagle board with smaller size, but the price is much more as compared to Raspberry Pi. Basically it is an initiative backed up by TI, if it is to be required to have acceptance from the students and entry-level developers then it need to be cost effective like Raspberry Pi.
The BBB is much better for motor control than the competition, so it'd be good to include motor control capes such as the BeBoPr and Replicape. Then there's the OpenROV cape, which includes an Arduino Mega, RC servo channels, etc.
Actually, I'd say the BBB, Arduino, and RPi are somwhat complimentary. The RPi is hard to beat as a micro-computer, the Arduino is hard to beat for simplicity, and the BBB combines processing power with powerful interface peripherals.
