Has anyone out there made their own smart watch recently or in the distant past? Now that commercial products are showing up, we want to hear if you ever made your own.

This is a fantastic project and in the photos it looks pretty professional.  The trouble with watches is that they are so small so you need really small components and fine soldering work to put them together.  I've never done anything like this.  However I once had a calulator watch (remember them?) and the strap broke.  Since it was not replaceable I thought I'd do something else with it.  I installed it in my car, in the ashtray, with a single NiCd cell for power, charged off the 12V.  I replaced the original beeper with a transistor and small speaker.  I got it beeping on the hour and got some funny looks from passengers when it beeped and they'd say "What's that?" and I'd proudly show them.... I was such a nerd :-)   It was useful for calculating my gas mileage though.

I use a slide rule to calculate gas mileage.  It's a lot quicker than pushing all those buttons, and never needs recharging :-)

@Betajet....."I use a slide rule to calculate gas mileage."     Almost as nerdy, and I'll bet you get just as funny looks :-)

I keep the slide rule in the glove compartment.  However, to get an idea of what a slide rule looks like on one's wrist, Google "circular slide rule watch images".

Drones are, in essence, flying autonomous vehicles. Pros & cons surrounding drones today might well foreshadow the debate over the development of self-driving cars. In the context of a strongly regulated aviation industry, "self-flying" drones pose a fresh challenge. How safe is it to fly drones in different environments? Should drones be required for visual line of sight, as are piloted airplanes? Is the technology advancing faster than we can answer the questions it poses? Panelists: Chad Sweet, Director of Engineering, Qualcomm; Yannick Levy, VP Corporate Business Development, Parrot; Jim Williams, ex-FAA drone chief; Michael Drobac, Exec. Director, Small UAV Coalition; Moderator: Junko Yoshida, Chief Int'l Correspondent, EE Times
