There is not much of a battle here. Mediatek's biggest competitors are standalone AP makers http://www.petrovgroup.com/pdfs/March%208%20-%20DT%20-%20Standalone%20application%20processors%20are%20winin..pdf . Their solutions are much more less integrated, with bigger portions of 3rd party block, and are akin to mainland integrator type fabless brands.
Spreadtrum would've been a better match for Qualcomm, but Qualcomm has stepped out of "dumphone" market years ago, while Spreadtrum still pours resources on it. Spreadtrum has gained dominance in ARM9 based devices, but solely because other competitors either went extinct in "dumbphone" to smartphone transition or switched to upper market segments
Actually the China market is looking a bit like the developed market; where Qualcomm makes all the money and Broadcom, Intel, Nvidia, ST-Ericsson, Texas Instuments etc fall about wondering how to mount any effective competition? I know ST-E and TI have left the market - perhaps the other should consider doing the same?
