I can see Microsoft uniting its various platforms with this standard, but it remains an open question whether users will accept it. It hasn't worked out well so far for Windows 8, which unites tablet and PC platforms with a common UI. If this standard puts too much baggage on either the high or low ends of the market it could have problems, just as Win8 works better for touch-based systems than standard PC hardware.
