I think they have researched a physical property of TIs. The applicability of the research is yet to be researched. I am not sure can we say it a fundamental research?

Looks like major break-through. Quantum computing is one application. What are the application for mass? Anything for bio-medical field or other speciality fields?

Sensitivity to dislocation and strain looks like fundamental issue. Protected surface states hardly seems appropriate term.
