Aaron meant non-Android or iOS  platforms, though I'm not sure what other OSes SmartTVs use

" Any time that there is a nonstandard OS, there are a lot of security issues that happen" What are those nonstandard Operating Systems used in smart TVs which are more vulnerable to hacking?

I agree.  You should always know when a camera is on.  When webcams first started, they had a physical cover so that people could know that the camera could not see them.  I guess that went away at some point.

The lack of an LED is inexcusable. PC hackers have found hardwired LEDs on webcams to be a frustratingly difficult to defeat security measure - This is a good thing!

I realize that the television manufacturers are using the cameras as part of their UI and that they don't want to creep people out by letting them know that their TV is watching them, but that is their problem. Even the Kinect on my xbox lets me know when it is looking at me.

Every new gadget needs to be designed with security in mind.  It is good that we have good hackers working on this so that manufacturers can increase the security before problems occur.

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Times’ Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
