$299 for one sprinker head is very expensive. I would need at least 6 of these for my yard and I don't see myself spending that much. I wonder if they would be able to control costs by using a z-wave controller and the sprinkler as a plain z-wave device. The cost of the wifi, pi subsytems is likely to be the major part of the bom cost.

Not only would you need so many, but I would also need it to only run once every two weeks since we are in a drought and have watering restrictions.  I guess the idea of this article is not this product but to showcase an application to spark other ideas.

Long ago the Heathkit Company made a freebie starter kit - a long pointy pcb probe that one stuck into the soil of a potted plant to determine its conductivity and need for water.

Do we really need the IoT to determine soil conductivity the hard way?  Sounds like a solution in desperate search of a problem - and profit...

Not only is it a solution in need of a problem, but it's yet another device that hackers will use to infiltrate your network.

A very samrt idea indded!

Alongwith the weather and soil data if a specified plant's watering requirements are also available from the cloud then it can really become a smart watering option.

A very clever idea, but I wonder how they plan to address the range limitation of WiFi, especially as they branch out to address the watering needs of commercial farming.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
