22,262 patents is the major factor that might have worked for development of LED lighting. Also the first 15 organizations filing more than 25% of patents will be major beneficiary of their development as they might have many alternative patents for LED lighting applications.
The referenced LED Patent Landscape 26 page report has an interesting Figure 3 ('Technology Evolution Tree of LED Patent Filings') which shows the number of patents filed in each year from 1994 through 2012 by 7 categories (Electronics / Light Management / Heat Management / Light Emissions / Lighting / Displays / Others). 'Light Emissions' is the dominant category while 'Others' is the smallest. Patent filings peaked between 2004 and 2008 and in 2012 were back down to the level of 1994.
