This seems to be the pattern in networking technology waves. Initial networks were purely internal business networks (think Vines, Novell, and others) that created specific silos of communication. These were swept aside by TCP/IP, but it took a long time. Chat rooms were (and to some degree still are) popular for siloed group communication, but Twitter expanded that to world-wide proportions.
The shift seems to happen when people realize the power of world-wide communications and get over the need to fence off their information. It seems like that is happening faster these days then it has in the past.
