This reminds me of a photographer I used to know -- we worked at the same company. This was a big organization with 5,000 employees at our site alone. His primary job was photographing electronic equipment -- circuits boards, graphic cards, computer systems, etc. And he was absolutely brilliant at it.
He also took people's passport photographs. The problem was that he was not a "people person" -- he didn't chat with you to put you at your ease -- and he didn't get you to sort out your hair or straighten your collar ... or anything that would have helped the pictures. The end result was that all of his people photos looked like rejects from The Muppet Show :-)

I've recently had to get new passport and dcriving licence photos done. I had to take my glasses off (which makes me look even uglier than I normally do) and they tell you not to smile. Frightening.
Those who have seen this story before, forgive me for retelling it here.....years ago I lost my driving licence and had to get a photo done in a hurry. The photo guy should have said to me "Mr Ashton, I think you should comb your hair first" but he didn't. The result was truly hilarious. It was great when I went through a police roadblock or hired a car. "Mr Ashton, can I see your driver's licence, please?" "Sure, but ONLY if you don't laugh at my photo." "Of course I won't!" I'd hand the licence over and the recipient - especially in the case of car hire girls - would usually be convulsed on the floor laughing. I still have it somewhere, I'll see if I can find it and post a pic....
