Smoked salmon, with cream cheese and capers, would be my favourite sandwich filling,

Whilst it is not unknown to eat a bagel as a sandwich, our tradition is to eat them open-face. More lox per unit area!

@MB - Martin you are obviously a purist in this regard and thought I don't always agree with them, I have learned that purists usually know what they are talking about.   Also, on of your photo captions states that "Smoked salmon, also known as lox, is acceptable to bagel purists".    So I feel fairly safe.   Smoked salmon, with cream cheese and capers, would be my favourite sandwich filling, and I would not want too much other stuff with it.   But I will try and get a couple more plain bagels to take away as well (I will have a long drive home so they will come in handy I am sure......)

To me  meat of any kind has no place on a bagel. I suggest you taste the bagel itself, with just some cream cheese. That way, you'll more taste the bagel, not the toppings.

I just returned from the local bagel bakery, with two dozen. Plain, rasin, egg, poppy seeds, black and white flavors. None of this jalapeno stuff for me.

@MB....  this place is in a shopping centre so not sure if it is the real deal.  I see they do a bacon one (row 2, Bagel 5) right next to my choice of smoked salmon (Row 3, Bagel 6).   Anyway, I will be there on May 8th I hope, and will report back.....

While I can't imagine what an Australian bagel might teste like, I'm sure you'll find it better than bacon :-)

@Antedeluvian - I found another Bagel place right on the road I will be using in a couple of weeks time when I go to Sydney for a Tektronix roadshow.   Looking forward to it!

Some Sunday morning, I'm going to drag myself out of bed and try Katz bagels.

@MB - just looked them up and found "chewy, onion-topped kuchen"

I reckon it would not take much for me to acquire a taste for those either!!

Like many of you, I was saddened to hear the news of Leonard Nimoy's death. His Star Trek character Mr. Spock was an inspiration to many of us who entered technical fields.
