Just returned from a few days in NYC. I want this where I live, not just in Brooklyn.

Q: What do you do for a choking dyslexic rabbi?

A: The L'Chayim maneuver!

There was a scene in an early M*A*S*H episide where Col. Blake toasts a Korean officer by saying "Cheers." The Korean officer replied "L'Chayim."

For those curious, L'Chayim means "To life."

I'm willing to bet that I'm the only one here who can make the following two truthful claims:

1.  I studied Yiddish while I was in grad school earning my MSEE.  I still have my texts annd my copy of the standard modern Yiddish-English dictionary (Uriel Weinreich's).

2.  I was the (unpaid) President of a federally (USA) chartered financial institution.

Any takers?

@antedeluvian: Far funnier was in "Blazing Saddles" where the Native American chief speaks in yiddish.

Ah, yes; Mel Brooks as the chief:  "Schwarzes!" when the Black family is circling their wagon.

@Stargzer..."fartshadeter—A bewildered, befuddled person."

NOW I know what to call myself!!! :-)

@Antedeluvian... "(Does anyone else remember McHale's Navy..."

Great program.  Haven't seen it for years, though.

"@Stargzer: Max kens Yiddish?

Shouldn't that be "Groks Yiddish"? LOL"

I thought that a Scots word would be closer to your homeland than a Martian word.  Then again, maybe I have your homeland wrong.

"Do I look like a fartshadeter?"

Oy, vey! No!  Had to look around for that one!  It's just that your knowledge seems boundless.  All Hail Max the Magnificent!

fartshadeter—A bewildered, befuddled person. This is a word appropriate even for someone to say about oneself. Highly unexpected events can fartshader you. "I'm all fartshadet because my daughter told me she's pregnant." "So what's to be fartshadet?" "You don't understand—she's still single."
