When will we see the first 10 nm tapeout? With Intel's 14 nm delay, there's a chance for this process to come out first!

foundry roadmap is a joke after 28nm.  16/14 is way too restrictive on design rules, too costly and offers little performance.

Truly, it does not matter, since there will be no economic advantage resulting from 14nm or 10nm.  Now all of us will have a chance to create innovative products, and not be enslaved by the incredible shrinking die.

@wilbur: Yeah IBM's opening up Power8 chips and boards also smells of desperation to me.

GloFo said they are still working with IBM on 10nm research and beyond in Albany, which this paper is evidence of.

I woudn't be surprised in IBM sells an advanced fab and maybe even transisitons some researchers to GloFo if a deal can be struck.

I read the news that IBM is putting its STG on sale and have dropped out of 14nm Samsung/GF consortium. Why is it then developing 14nm and 10nm process? I read last quarter results for IBM and hardware is down the most.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
