I liked your article.  I do think that for the deeply embedded sensor space additional protocols are required.   For example, CoAP is the protocol which ARM is pushing in this space while ZeroMQ is one of the protocols used to collect  sensor data at CERN.  Memory footprint is very important for smaller systems and these additional protocols do a better job of this.

Why SSH2 isn't there? It's a routable protocol with persistent connection, and is one of the best for its security track record.

I would say that the problem you are trying to describe in the article is more applicable to data structures and formats that are pushing over the wire, rather than ways of delivering them.
