Bluetooth Smart

I just want to make it clear -- I meant no offense to Bluetooth SIG by writing this piece. However, as I stressed in this blog, I am so weary of the world of smart everything. Am I the only one feeling that way?

Smart is the hype now. We have the examples of the past, remember the e- (when e-mail started the branding of everything with e-everything) years ago, or the i- when the i-pod triggered the i-everything, or the web-everything, etc. Later we could have the NG (Next generation) or whatever becomes catchy and hype... but beware of the lawyers in case someone claims patenting the catchy apendage.

@Jefe, um, NG won't work. That sounds like No Good!

How about "Bluetooth TNG -- The smart choice!" LOL

Hi, Max. So, what exactly does TNG stand for, then?

And of course, Max, damn it, you are falling back onto the word "smart" again, calling it "the smart choice"!

TNG = "The Next Generation" as in "Star Trek TNG"

That was deliberate -- it was a joke -- combining Jefe's NG suggestion with the "smart" you loath so much LOL

OK, Max. I admit that I missed your subtle reference to "Startrek TNG." But seriously, how do you pronounce TNG as an abbreviation?

You spell it out like "Star Trek T-N-G"

Like the design automation conference where you can spell it out like "D-A-C" -- but unlike it in that you can't say TNG as one word, but you can say "DAC" to rhyme with "snack"

@ Junko I am so weary of the world of smart everything.

We could use the word 'intelligent' instead, except for:

a) Marketeers loathe words of more than 3 syllables, too hard for consumers to remember, so 'intelligent' would have to be shortened to 'i'.

b) Apple might then claim trademark rights to the letter 'i'.

Sounds like a lot of BS

Changing the name to Bluetooth Smart sounds like a lot of BS to me.  Not a good idea IMO.

I rather like BLE.  I once wrote a logic editor called BLE.  It's also fun to go around saying "blee blee blee".  People think you've lost it, but it is fun.
