I wired my house for GigE years ago and have used that as the standard across my network. At the time we were lucky to get high single-digit Mb/sec out of our cable provider, but I figured that it was worth it to be able to quickly move files around on my network and that they would eventually catch up. Fast-forward to today, and Cox (my ISP) just announced that they are kind of thinking about maybe upgrading to gigabit service eventually.
Backbone updates like described here show that the technology is there. The question that I am betting they are asking is if their accounting systems can count the data fast enough to police the data limits that they are imposing. Until they get some real competition they will not be interested in this technology.
