I think having wireless connectivity built in to all phones - especially the iPhone - will be essential in determining a standard. As it is, the consumer needs to buy more devices and wires to wirelessly charge. Once the early adopters buy into a multimode solution and, eventually, resonant technology, the rest will follow.
