To take measurements; it would depend on the customer's research needs; use an oscilloscope for time domain signaling or optical modulation analyzer for frequency or I&Q signaling to calibrate expected performance from the AWG; then; if it's an active device; compare expected response from the calibrated source to the device's output. If it's a passive device; send the calibrated source through the device and evaluate against the source itself.
