Seems the oxygen should prefer continuing upward into the Hf or Ta rather than return to the filament, which would still have higher oxygen concentration than a metal.

Resistion: If it was down to me I would just repeat the step down pulse train and that would give the adavantage of the step down pulse effect and be the equivalent of repeating the maximum pulse. There is a contact email address on the VLSI paper who may be able to provide a more accurate answer. It is yylin@fudan.edu.cn

The complementary atomic switch looks like two CBRAM cells with a common upper electrode. Any two cells connected the same bit line would behave the same way.

The Shanghai group is not being entirely straightforward about monitoring current during the SET down ramp. What happens when the ramp reaches 0 without success? Why not stay at the highest level all the way?

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
