Equivant time or random interleaved sampling only works on repetitive waveforms producing a high effective sampling rate.

Real time sampling works with transient(single shot) as well as repetitive signals.

There are two kinds of digital oscillosocpes: sampling and real-time. Real-time scopes attempt to capture a signal one sampme at a time and reconstruct it one sample after another. Thus, real-time scopes can work on any waveform. Sampling scopes sample at a slow rate but have very high bandwidth. Signals must be repetitive because the scope samples at different points on each cyle then reconstructs the waveform.
