Philistines all of them, how can you not be in awe of Dr Who, I too have watched it from the beginning but the new format where some 40 minutes once per week gives you the story is my preference as I don't like piecemeal viewing.
From your list I haven't seen any of them except Orphan Black, which is superb. I watched one episode and was hooked. Brillian acting and a fabulous story. Not always factual in the science department but then it does have the word fiction in there somewhere.
My wife heads off into the land of nod as well, but I have too much energy for that and just get up and watch something else until I feel I am tired enough to sleep. I haven't done much on my projects for a few years now because I just have too much work and so need to do something else in my free time like watching SciFi.
Big Bang is a classic to and will be one series of the day that will endure, so many are fly by nighters, a lot like Rap (talking music, not SciFi :-) ), which is popular now but my guess is in 15 years nobody will talk about it.
Well whether or not you take the plunge now or later depends on how many other series you have queued up. I don't feel at east unless I have at least two series ready to go after I finish the one I am currently on. Have you seen True Detective? Hands down, the most awesome show to come along since The Wire!
