More smart grid lessons?

I know a few billion dollars of federal stimulas money was spent on US smart grid projects over the last few years.

I'd like to hear more lessons learned.

This was an interesting article on Smart Grid but it only talks about the customer interface aspect. I think it would also be interesting to know how this can be used to improve the overall efficiency of the grid. For instance, my local utility offers smart thermostats that they can adjust remotely (by a few degrees) to reduce the peak load. I've also heard of car chargers that can be set to only run during off-peak hours. Has any of this made a difference in the efficiency of energy production and transmission? If so, what customer incentives are in place (or necessary) to encourage the customers to adopt these devices?

Can some statistics be added to this very valuable report on smart grid.

It will help to understand whther the investments made are paid back in terms of the energy savings or the peak demand reduction and better utilization of the installed generation capacity.

 

Such statistics will be very helpful for the funding agencies as well as the implementing agencies

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling.
