Not sure...why 25 Gb/s?...such a strange number...I haven't followed this for years but I would think 40 Gb/s was more natural...or is it 4x25=100?

It seems like many flavours of datacenter ethernet are settling down! Couple of years ago, there was 10Gbps x 4 and 10Gbps x 10 for 40Gig and 100Gig ethernet, some what influenced by the legacy InfiniBand camp. I am glad to see 25Gbps getting the approval of the majority.

We did have healthy discussions around 25/28gig SerDes couple of years ago after OIF / CEI standard for 25G class designs was approved:

Here is another link to a presentation on signal integrity challenges for 100Gig ethernet that considers the 25/28Gig lanes as one of the options (focus mostly on the backplane).

There are certainly specific issues, complexities, and challenges of moving to 25G or higher, and I'm glad to see this decision by IEEE. For futher reading/info: Steve Tarnovich at EDN posted an article on 100GbE recently, and this is a major topic that we deal with at DesignCon.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
