This investment is simply for increasing the producing capacity or it is being spent after some research in sensor design as well?

Are they actually stacking image sensor slices in order to create increased sensitivity?

No they are not multiple slices of Image Sensor, but they have stacked the image sensing part over the circuit part, meaning they have differentiated the electronic circuit part and the image sensing part on the semiconductor subtract. This way they are being able to have better control over the image sensing.

It make sense to integrate the CMOS with some processing capacity to improve the image capture quality. Right now most of the processing happens after the image is captured but this can be improve.

Yes, this improvement can be considered in the same direction, the sensing part is off loaded to some other segment so that it will less affect by other signals on the same substrate.

Seems to me that we are going to enter a. Phase of more features not more pixels. I'm interested in better HDR not more pixels these days...

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
