@wco: Maybe we should spring and get Max a kilt...

Have you seen those Utility Kilts? I once saw a guy wearing one at an ourdoor beer festival and I thought "You're a braver man than me"

Maybe we should spring and get Max a kilt before the Union disolves so he can learn to curtsy properly. I think it would go very well with the Hawaiian shirt.

@Arielle: We'd have to do some research to ascertain if that is indeed a Swiss custom or unique to this particular family.

Remember that this was one of Antedeluvian's cousins ... just sayin' LOL

@Ariella: But curtsies seem to require a full gown.

Well, I only ever wear shorts (or jeans) and Hawaiian shirts, so you shouldn't expect to see me curtsying in the near future LOL

@Antedeluvian: There could be problems there as well! Just make sure you get bottles or don't drink from the can LOL

Fortunately, alcohol rarely touches my lips LOL

@antedeluvian interesting, yes, some men do use handshakes as regular greeting, and in some more casual contexts that turns into slaps on the back, etc. As for the son shaking his mother's hand, that's an interesting one. We'd have to do some research to ascertain if that is indeed a Swiss custom or unique to this particular family.

@Max I also thought bowing has an advantage. Come to think of it, a couple of hundred years ago, the protocol over here probably included bows and curtsies. But curtsies seem to require a full gown.

@Ariella: Currently, we're in a generation of obsessive hand-sanitizers, so I suppose many would prefer not to come into direct contact.

Maybe the Japanese have it right with the bowing -- although keeping track of how low you should bow to each person is a tad tricky.

I'd be happy do do away with the handshake and make do with a gift of beer LOL

@Antedeluvian: The residents at my mom's retirement village [...] employ the elbow bump.

Well -- I learn something new every day -- I just Googled this myself (you aren't the only one who knows how to Google LOL) -- according to this Wikipedia page, "An early popularization of the elbow bump began outside the Kalaupapa Leprosy Settlement in 1969..."
