I am not convinced about the reasons given by the company to justify such a massive job cuts. Most of the job cuts will be in Germany so i see a move to shift jobs to developing countries.

@wilber, I agree. What the company is not saying is where it is planning to move its production -- a glaring omission in my view.

I think they are probably going to cut down the production.

One relevant factor is that the LED replacements for incandescents measure life in tens of years, not hundreds of hours.

New business comes; old business goes. This job cut indeed sounds to me is a cut of production related job. LED lighting is getting traction because of energy saving and largely on the reasonable price. Moving towards LED lighting, the production can all be done by a couple companies in China or Bangalore.

It may be one of the reason that the sales of the LED have not picked up as the company expected. People are replacing their incadecent lamps with LEDs but the price of LEDs are on a higher side.

You are incorrect, most of the job cuts will be outside of Germany.  Only 1700 out of 7800 will be in Germany

NEXT UPCOMING BROADCAST
In conjunction with unveiling of EE Times’ Silicon 60 list, journalist & Silicon 60 researcher Peter Clarke hosts a conversation on startups in the electronics industry. One of Silicon Valley's great contributions to the world has been the demonstration of how the application of entrepreneurship and venture capital to electronics and semiconductor hardware can create wealth with developments in semiconductors, displays, design automation, MEMS and across the breadth of hardware developments. But in recent years concerns have been raised that traditional venture capital has turned its back on hardware-related startups in favor of software and Internet applications and services. Panelists from incubators join Peter Clarke in debate.
