Theremins

The song where most of use first heard a Theremin (though we may not have realised it at the time, I didn't) was the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations".  So I hope you'll soon be posting a video of you playing that on your Ukelele, multi-tracked on the PSoC Theremin?

I had no idea -- I'll have to listen to it again as soon as I get a spare moment.

Hi Max, When you get your Theremini (and I'm sure it will end up in your office...er..."Pleasure Dome"), you could post a short video comment with you playing it.

I think EE Times should buy me one for research purposes -- I could do a tear-down (said Max, hopefully :-)

@Max, what would you rather have: a ultra sleek Theremini or the joy of making one yourself?

I've already had the joy of making one myself -- now I'l like to play with one that works (LOL), so if you're offering to buy me one I'll take the ultra sleek Theremini :-)

How about using a Leap Motion controller instead?

For theremin fans, there's a very enjoyable new novel out now, inspired by the life of Lev Termen:

"Us Conductors is a beautiful, haunting novel inspired by the true story of the Russian scientist, inventor and spy Lev Termen - creator of the theremin - and of Clara Rockmore - its greatest player."

"Roving from Manhattan speakeasies to the Siberian taiga, from Alcatraz to the Kremlin, this is a book of love and electricity, jazz and espionage - filled with music, longing, and a little kung fu."

A plastic violin might work, but something about it turns me off.  Similarly I think a "real" theremin should use vacuum tubes and live in a wooden cabinet.  But to each his own.

Hey, I have a long wood saw and a violin bow I will sell you.  Too basic?

I love vacuum tubes and wooden cabinets, but you can do so much with digital implementations, like the Theremini can be set up to lock on to individual notes and stuff like that.

I've been looking for a reasonable implementation of a Theremin for a while now. I have a small PSOC board, but I've never been able to get it to connect up to my computer, so that's out.

I've been experimencting with the Xmos Analog SliceKit, but It's not clear that it has capacitve touch inputs. If I can figure that out, I'll see if I can use the SliceKit to make this Theremin

A couple of years ago, I built the Theremin kit from PAIA http://www.paia.com/theremax.asp.It sounds nice but needs recalibration from time to time.

The most difficult part is the wooden cabinet finishing :-)

This looks like a real nice kit ... now, the big question is "How often do you play it?"

I know just what you mean -- a lot of my projects feature wooden cabinets, and the look-and-feel of these can make-or-break the project.
