Few end users have any idea what microcode is running on their processors from their various software vendors and therefore what their potential exposure is to processor chip bugs. I know from my personal experience that my Windows 7 laptop computer often locks up due to Carbonite back-up software "locking" files for backup even when the Carbonite software is "paused" because the backup operations are scheduled for hours that I am not using the computer personally. Sometimes the condition clears in 5 or 10 minutes; other times I must reboot the computer. Neither solution is convenient or acceptable.

Agreed. I imagine we may see similar bugs coming up as TSX becomes prominent in other chipsets.

Sure this does not matter for a chip to be placed into a tablet or embeded into whatever device.

For Intel *need* a fix for any next server chip: Be it Xeon or Atom, it does not matter, as soon as workload is heavily multithreaded, there is a strong possibility for transactionnal memory to be a plus for performances. Not too long before it even becames mandatory.

As data rates begin to move beyond 25 Gbps channels, new problems arise. Getting to 50 Gbps channels might not be possible with the traditional NRZ (2-level) signaling. PAM4 lets data rates double with only a small increase in channel bandwidth by sending two bits per symbol. But, it brings new measurement and analysis problems.
