I see two medical applications for these tests. First, the test could be used to diagnose infectious diseases (assuming that suitable thresholds have been test to ignore ambient pathogens). Secondly this technology could be used to implement personalized medical treatments. Some diseases (e.g. some cancers) have treatments that vary depending upon the patient's genetics. If this system were configured to detect those varieties, it could enable doctors to determine the patient's genetic type so that they could prescribe the optimal treatment. This new technology seems to be appearing just in time to enable inexpensive testing to determine genetic types and allow the correct treatments to be selected.

@Rick: one state of the art example can detect 170,000 viruses and  proteins(including quantity) on a single chip , using photonics.

In their research papers they claim it should be cheap.

The replacable part is "10 square millimeter gold plate pierced with arrays of extremely small holes less than 200 nm wide." the holes are covered with small amounts of biofilms that attract the targets.

BTW is there any manufacturing technology that can deposit a huge variety of biofilms on this array for cheap ?

@groovyGeek :what seems unique about this is : its probably close to commercial , its costs are good, and it might be targeted to consumers. if true , the combination is powerful. also they don't Mention patents ,which is interesting and might be good for the field.

Just as in the discusions after a recent EET column, let's be careful to distinguish "DNA sensing" from "DNA sequencing".  Two totally different beasts.  I don't really see much in the PR push by InSilixa - basically an integrated optical hybridization sensor.  Plus, it is not like this is exactly new news

Also there's theranos, probaly the most advanced commercialization effort of this tech.

Lab-on-chip is a really promising technology for semiconductor industry in future. Research institutes as well as companies are workign in this sector. It has huge potential for areas like biosensor development, CMOS based micro camera development, EDA tool development, data analysis application development etc. Besides developed countries, developing countries will be a potential market for the solution. Besides VC funding lot of government funding will come in this sector.
