@Rick: more than consolidating, Infineon sees value in going to verticals within power electronics which would have taken longer to develop in-house and market. GaN-on-Si is now reaching technology maturity, complementing pure Si MOSFETs. Along with SiC devices, all three would make a deep product portfolio in a power devices company.
Si MOSFETs have reached their maturity and are already commotized by the likes of Alpha Omega (AOS). The power electronic industry has been nurturing higher breakdown voltage technologies like SiC and GaN. The latter is a lot complicated story when it comes its various incarnations, of which, Gan-on-Si is the one in power devices to hit market at present.
