As IHS revealed, ST is not a leader in automotive applications--yet. Last year it introduced its first accellerometer qualified for air-bag deployment--a safety critical application. My guess is that the company wants to dominate automotive like it dominates consumer, but its got some strong competition from Bosch, Freescale, Analog Devices et. al.
