Yes, there may still be the need for some external electronics--especially in its first generation--but the semiconductor in the fiber should greatly reduce its cost. Thanks for the clarification.

Even if need of some box using electrons continues, price of box would be much much cut down

Rather than using a $10,000 box to convert electrons into photons and back again during fiber optical photonic communications, researchers have put the semiconductors that perform the task on the fly inside the fiber itself!
