Infineon Technologies AG and MIPS Technologies Inc. have announced that Infineon is licensing the MIPS64 5Kc processor core for use in next-generation integrated access devices (IADs) and specialized local-area network (LAN) switching applications.

According to the companies, Infineon will license both the MIPS64 5Kc processor core and a MIPS64 5Kc-based subsystem, which will be integrated into Infineon's system-on-chip (SoC) solutions.

According to the companies, Infineon chose the core to complement its portfolio of high-performance real-time control and digital signal processing core architectures.

Infineon said the core will allow the company to broaden the array of integrated and scalable broadband communications SoC solutions it offers to its global customer base.

MIPS said getting Infineon on its list of 64-bit processors will help to proliferate the company's microprocessor architectures in the communications market, especially in Europe. Visit www.mips.com for more information.
