LONDON — Foundry chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (Hsinchu, Taiwan) has reported a slight rise in sales compared with 2008 in both its unconsolidated and consolidated sales results for October 2009.

TSMC reported consolidated net sales of NT$ 30.22 billion (about $622 million) for the month of October 2009, up 4.4 percent from the previous month and up 2.5 percent from October 2008. TSMC's October year-on-year climb was a much lower percentage than that achieved by rival foundry United Microelectronics Corp. (Hsinchu, Taiwan) for the same month.

For the period January to October 2009 TSMC's consolidated sales have totaled NT$233.87 billion (about $4.81 billion), a decrease of 21.5 percent from the equivalent ten months in 2008, reflecting the depth of the recession that began in the fourth quarter of 2008.

In percentage terms TSMC is also performing less well than UMC in the year-to-date. UMC sales are down 14.3 percent from the equivalent ten months in 2008.
