SAN FRANCISCO — Marshall Turner has resigned his position as president and CEO of Toppan Photomasks Inc., effective June 1, and will be replaced by a longtime executive with the company, EE Times has learned. Turner plans to return to his venture capital business.

David Murray, a 17-year veteran of Toppan Photomasks (which was formerly DuPont Photomasks Inc.), will take the reins as president and CEO of the Round Rock, Texas, photomask supplier. Murray will also assume Turner's spot on the company's board of directors.

Murray is currently Toppan Photomasks' executive vice president of worldwide operations. He previously held a series of executive positions with the company, including operations, engineering, quality, supply-chain management, materials and asset management.

Turner, a longtime venture capitalist, joined the board of then DuPont Photomasks in 1996. He has served as president and CEO since June 2003. He had previously served the company as interim chairman and CEO from June 1999 to May 2000. From 1981 through 1998, Turner was a general partner at Taylor & Turner Associates Ltd., based here.

DuPont Photomasks posted losses totaling more than $180 million in the two years preceding its $650 million acquisition by Toppan Printing in 2005. The company, now a wholly owned subsidiary, says it has since returned to profitability.

“Marshall has demonstrated how remarkable leadership can transform a company," Murray said through a statement. "I am honored to have learned from the best.”

Toppan Photomasks has named Katsuhiro Kinemura, currently a senior general manager at Toppan Printing, to fill Murray's position as executive vice president of worldwide operations. Michael Hadsell, currently vice president and general manager of the company's business in the Asia-Pacific region, will be promoted to the newly created position of executive vice president of worldwide sales.

“During our first year as part of the Toppan group, significant progress and strength at our operations around the world have been recognized through numerous customer awards and additional technology development partnerships with leading chip makers," Turner said. "I am proud of our accomplishments and believe now is the ideal time for Dave to lead the team into the company’s next era of growth and success.”
