SAN JOSE, Calif. — Apple Computer reported healthy gains Wednesday (April 18) in quarterly revenue and profits on the strength of strong computer and iPod shipments.

Apple (Cupertino, Calif.) said net quarterly profit totaled $410 million on second quarter revenues totaling $4.36 billion. The results topped year-ago totals of $3.24 billion in revenue and $290 million in net profits. Second quarter 2006 profits worked out to $0.47 per diluted share.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the computer maker has generated more than $10 billion in revenue and nearly $1 billion in earnings during the first half of 2006. "Our transition to Intel processors is going very well," Jobs added in a statement.

Apple said it shipped 1,112,000 Mac computers and more than 8.5 million iPods music players during the quarter. The iPod shipments represented a 61 percent increase over the same period last year.

Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the quarterly results represent the second highest quarterly sales in Apple's history. Year-on-year revenue growth totaled 34 percent and sequential earnings growth of 41 percent.

Oppenheimer forecast third quarter revenue growth of between $4.2 billion and $4.4 billion.
