LONDON — Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan, has called for more semiconductor industry cooperation between the U.S. and China, adding that China would increase intellectual property rights protections, according to a Xinhua report carried by the People's Daily.
Zeng met with a delegation from the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) on Thursday (June 15) and said he hoped U.S. chip companies would set up R&D operations in China, which would help train Chinese engineers, the report said.
At the same time, Zeng said China would increase its efforts to protect intellectual property rights, the report said. Previously, a lack of regard for IP in China and piracy have been barriers to high-tech investment in China.
In recognition of Chinese progress, the World Semiconductor Council recently extended an invitation to the China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) to join its membership (see June 14 story). The WSC, established in 1996, includes the industry associations of the world's leading semiconductor-producing regions.
The delegation was headed by SIA chairman Brian Halla, and included representatives from Advanced Micro Devices, Intel, Micron Technologies and Quicklogic, the report said.
