SEOUL, South Korea Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has begun volume production of 7-inch WVGA-level (800 x 480 pixel) LCDs with a single-chip driver.
Until now, the market for mobile LCDs with WVGA resolution has focused on 8-inch and 9-inch displays. Samsung's single-chip solution replaces the four to seven driver ICs common for a 7-inch display, eliminating the need for a separate printed circuit board to house timing control and power components, the company said.
"Using a single-chip packaging solution, we have integrated most of the display electronics on an amorphous silicon LCD," said Yun Jin-Hyuk, executive vice president and head of the Mobile Display Business Team of Samsung.
Samsung used its proprietary non-crystalline silicon gate technology to develop the LCD, allowing the gate driver IC to be fabricated directly on the glass substrate and integrate the timing controller within the driver IC.
Samsung plans to expand 7-inch LCD production capacity to 10 million units by next year and expand the product line-up to include 5-inch displays the first half of next year.
